Friends at Work
Had some drinks with the work gang yesterday.
Usual place, great time, good vibes.
And i sat there thinking -- this is the hard part, isn't it?
Fitting in well, actually having real friends in the office, being able to hang out, people knowing who you are and vice versa, earning a good reputation among your peers, having good times together outside of work...
The work itself is typically just that..work. Easy to ace.
What's tougher is finding a niche for yourself within the office.
Where relationships are already built, trust already established... and you gotta crawl your way in these networks and find a comfortable spot somewhere, somehow.
That's tough.
It's so easy to move on to another job. To quit and go along.
But positive and good work relations are harder to come by than jobs, i feel.
My work is ok, but i have to admit that i work with a darn great bunch of talented folks.
Folks who have standards, folks who demand and expect excellence, folks whom I can seriously learn more than a thing or two from, folks who are names in the industry, folks whose minds and intellect dazzle me frequently, folks who... are not less amazing just cos i see them in the pantry making coffee everyday.
I've made that mistake before, of leaving a place before contemplating all options or really going down to the root cause or making more of an effort to make things work.
Cos it's so much easier to find a new job, get a fresh start and "move on".
But of cos, i know now that it was my immaturity and incompetence at dealing with people.
Now, i appreciate my colleagues more.
These are not just people you clock in/out with.
These are people with their own life stories, people with ambitions & intentions like yourself, people who can be far more mean but chose professionalism.
People who know your life, know your style, know your work.
People who see you day in, day out... sharing 8-10 hours of your daily life.
I appreciate having these few 'friends' to lean on at work.
Who knows the exit routes, who knows your favourite stall for lunch, who knows you are dreading the 4pm meeting, who knows where your son goes to school, who knows you are wearing a new dress, who knows the random stuff that they can just as easily choose to ignore.
They make the difference between a good/depressing Monday.
